Leading lines are one among the many elements of composition such as rule of thirds, positive space, symmetry, patterns, depth of field, balancing elements etc. While some of these are heavily used, leading lines remain quite underutilized element of the composition.
Proper use of leading lines may enhance the beauty & appeal of photographs dramatically as they draw viewer’s attention towards the subject or point of interest in the frame. Leading lines make viewer’s feel as if they are part of the frame & have the physical reach to the subject/point of interest by traversing through the leading lines present in the frame.
In landscape photography, most often we feel that the image of a landscape doesn’t imitate the scale or depth/vastness as perceived by our eyes, use of leading lines are among the some of the tools to make viewer’s eyes perceive the same expanse/vastness or scale of a 3 dimensional landscape in a two dimensional frame.
