Things You Need To Know To Be A Food Photographer

Food photography has been a rage all over the internet, for the last decade. While it may have risen as a simple intention of sharing one’s tasteful experiences with others, it has evolved into a more serious and passionate art. It’s not merely snapchatting a click of your KitKat milkshake, it’s about capturing the essence of the dish, the beauty of the cuisine, and the hard work of the chef all in one. From food blogging to critical reviewing of famous restaurants to adventurous journeys of foodies with a camera, food photography has given a new genre of art to the world.

So to the interested layman, here are a few tips to become a skilled and efficient food photographer.

1. Throw A Light

Food blogging is all about the vibrancy and exotic colours of the dish. It is crucial to capture the right colours for the dish to look as appealing as it tastes and for that, lighting needs to be perfect. Dull and dark pictures not only lose the beauty of the moment but also fail to capture the message or picture you want to convey to the viewers, especially in the case of food photography. If you are shooting in a street, make sure the ambience and the lighting highlight the dish and not obscure it.

2. Give It Another Angle

One of the most common and trusted angles for a food click is the overhead angle. Capturing a dish from above, in all its glory, brings out the most beautiful colours in the picture. However, it would be unadvisable to just stick to one shot. While overhead angles do give you a scenic picture, a perspective close up of a chocolate truffle or a condensing glass of ice cream shake, makes it look more real, more attractive, and of course more irresistible. So close ups and slanted angles sometimes seem to do the trick.


3. Do It With Style

Styling the dish is extremely important. With a combination of good lighting and classy plating and dressing, even Gol Gappas can compete with an international cuisine. In styling, you need to highlight the basic feature or taste of the dish. For example, in the case of a choco-lava cake, a picture of the cake dripping with lava, intensifies the deliciousness of the dish same goes for the picture below as a simple item of food can look way different if photographed properly.

It’s important to know what your dish is and what can make it can look good. A simple example can be that, if you are photographing an ice-cream, the fact that it melts easily is the most important to consider. In the case of a deep dish or may be a beverage like a mojito or a milkshake, it would be more appropriate to take a side click, because that gives it a more real and tempting look. Steaming hot dishes, if captured with whirls of steam rising, can amplify the appeal of the dish.

5. What's In The Background

To set the picture right, it's essential to choose a background that compliments the plated cuisine. The depth of the background also resonates with the picture quality, as it gives a three-dimensional look. Complimenting a bright dish with a faded or subtle background or a lighter and more intricate dish with a dark background can make a big difference to your food portfolio.

6. Where There Is Will, There Is Variety

For a food photographer, variety is a must. If you are covering exquisite cuisines, you should also reach out to the spicy street food. This not only makes an interesting portfolio, but the huge diversity amongst the cuisines can enhance your experience and your photography skills.
