A photographer’s shooting gear is his/her lifeline. Breaking an equipment or scratching a camera lens is the worst nightmare for a passionate photographer. Taking care of your gear, maintaining its life and protecting it from damage is extremely essential for a photographer. One essentiality is regularly cleaning your apparatus so as to avoid any severe harm to the sensitive kit in the long run. Here are a few handy products for a perfect cleansing of your photography gear:

1. Dust Away!

Camera lenses are susceptible to gathering a lot of dust and dirt, considering they are exposed to pollution and bad weather many a time. Simply wiping a lens isn’t adequate in such a case because it will only make the dust stick to the lens and cause scratches in the long run. Therefore it is important to first brush a lens or use a blower to dust away all the dirt particles from a lens without any moisture. For this, you can use a blower like Giottos Rocket Blaster Dust-Removal Tool or a can of compressed air although many believe that compressed air can is not as effective as a blower.

2. Use A Micro-Fibre Cloth

Even while cleaning you need to prevent your camera and other equipment from attracting dust or dirt from the surroundings or even due to the cleaning process itself. For this, placing your gear on an anti-static microfiber cloth is a must, since it prevents your camera from absorbing more dirt particles. A microfibre cloth is also important for cleaning or wiping your camera lens. It doesn’t cause any scratches and effectively wipes your lens clean.

3. Lens Cleaning Pen

A lens cleaning pen is a two-in- one product which helps you clean your lens of dust and also get rid of oily fingerprints on your precious camera lenses. The gentle fibres of the brush help you to dust away all particles of a lens without any fear of scratches and this is why this brush can be used in place of a blower. The carbon-containing cleaning tip of the pen can then be used to brush away greasy fingerprints off a camera lens or even the viewfinder. This is much more effective than using tissue papers or clothes since the latter tend to smear the fingerprint and not completely remove it.

4. Lens Wipes

Lens wipes are easily available and relatively cheaper. They contain a lens-cleaning solution which evaporates without leaving moisture or scratches. These are particularly useful while travelling since they are easy to store and can be used at any time to clean the lens hassle free.

5. Tip: Prevention is better than cure

Apart from regularly cleaning your photography gear, it is essential to protect your equipment from damage. For instance, using a waterproof camera bag outdoors is a strategic move as it prevents damage due to extreme weathers. Another point to remember is that using cheap lens-cleaning solutions or liquid glass-cleaning products is a big no-no! This is because these chemicals are not as effective and make your lens lose its anti-glare coating. Also, carrying around your camera without its original bag is not a smart move since it is exposed to polluted air and hard surfaces and therefore, inevitably prone to damage.
