Everyone knows how important the "eyesight" of a photographer is to click an admirable photograph. Unless a photographer sees a scene, subject, and settings, how would he be able to capture it in his image, and present it to the audience? Well, photographer Bhavesh Patel hailing from Mumbai has challenged this idea strongly. Bhavesh is the only completely visually impaired photographer who shoots commercial ads. Let us know more about Bhavesh Patel, who clicks photos with the mind's eye.

Bhavesh remembers his keen interest in arts as a child. He would go to an art gallery with his uncle who used to describe the visuals to him. It enhanced his desire to leave a mark in the field of art. Bhavesh is also thankful to his brother, who would motivate him to paint by listening to his descriptions of things. Later, he entered St. Xavier’s College to pursue graduation. There he came across Partho Bhowmick, in charge of a group named Blind With Camera, who taught him to take photos with a basic Kodak camera. At Dadar, they would click pictures of pigeons together by following the sound of flapping their wings. Then he would ask others to describe the photographs once developed, just like what his uncle would do. Partho soon became his friend, philosopher, and guide.

This organization, Blind With Camera, has inspired more than fifteen hundred visually challenged Indians to consider photography as a hobby. In the workshops arranged by them, sighted photographers are blindfolded and photographers like Bhavesh teach them to click pictures without seeing. It increases their photography skills multiple folds. In this way, Bhavesh and the others feel proud to empower photographers who are privileged with eyesight.

Bhavesh took the photo of Katrina Kaif for the iconic Lux advertisement in 2015. As he mentioned, other photographers helped him to do the work. They would set the lights and backdrops and would help Bhavesh to recognize Katrina's positions. Upon sensing her perfect pose by listening to the slightest sounds of Katrina's movements, the fraction of the fabric of her dress, and some mechanical sounds, coming from the air generator to flow Katrina's gown, he clicked the photographs. Bhavesh's photo bagged gold in the Goafest ABBY Awards.

Another important venture of his is the Oppo reno 10X zoom mobile ad. It took him to several places in Delhi to shoot. As a professional photographer, Bhavesh never let his physical challenge be a barrier in his career. He perceives photography as an art. He thinks that a photographer should always make society aware of situations, with their real images.

Bhavesh says that when a photographer is fully focused, he becomes more aware of his surroundings, and understands the nuances of photography better. To him, photography is a way of recording the moment one spends at a place at a certain point in time. Many visually impaired photographers in India are still not sure about taking photography as a career. Bhavesh Patel advises them to just jump at it, without giving it a second thought. As he says, in such cases you should first attempt to proceed with photography, because otherwise, you can never know whether it is good or bad for you.
