Basic Camera Functions All Beginners Should Know

Have you just got your first camera? Congratulations! Now, this is the time for you to know some of the most basic functions of your camera, to click great shots. Whatever features your brand new camera has, these functions will be applicable. Without wasting time, let us discuss what they are.

Here are the top 5 functions of a camera that you need to understand:-

1.ISO

 

It refers to the sensitivity of a camera towards the light. The more the ISO, the more will cause grains or noise in the final image. So you should keep your ISO low, such as 300 or less, to get a high-quality photo. For low light, you can increase the ISO value up to 800.

2. Shutter Speed  

It can be defined as the length of time the shutter of the camera is open. It controls the exposure of light on each frame. For example, 1/200 shutter speed refers to the entry of light at 1/200th of a second in each frame. You should never set a shutter speed that exceeds the focal length of the camera. For instance, if the focal length is 200 mm, you should set the shutter speed at 1/200th or faster. Generally, to shoot video, the shutter speed needs to be set to twice the frame rate. If the frame rate is 24 fps, the shutter speed should be 1/48. It is called the 180-degree shutter angle rule. It gives the proper motion blur effect.

3. Aperture

 

It controls how much light would enter through the lens. When the aperture is high, more light enters and you require less light while taking a photo. This plays an important role especially when you want to take indoor photos without flash.The lens aperture is measured as the focal length/ effective diameter of the aperture of the lens, such as f/3.5. It is better to have a lens that is f/2.0 than a lens that is f/3.5, to take photos indoors without flashLarger the aperture, the smaller the f-number.Also keep in mind that if you set a higher aperture, the depth of field of your photo will be more shallow, and less of your frame will be focused when shooting. So, if you are shooting landscapes, or want to get most of your image in focus, keep your aperture narrower i.e. f stop higher.

4. White Balance

 

 

By adjusting the white balance, you can adjust the colors of your photo. It refers to how the camera registers light, regulates color temperature, and gives the photo a more natural color. Each color has its corresponding temperature and so, white balance is measured in Kelvin, the unit of temperature. Usually, auto white balance goes well with most of the shots, but if you want to experiment, you can manually set the white balance. Usually, there are plenty of options that you can get in the white balance settings. Candlelight is 1000-2000 K, Daylight is 5500-6500 K, Midday is 6000-7000 K, cloudy is 9000-10000 K, etc.

5. Frame Rate

 

Frame rate refers to the number of discrete frames that are recorded in each second of video. It is measured in Frames Per Second (FPS) units. 30 FPS is the most commonly used frame rate for web videos. Feature films are shot at 24 fps, whereas broadcast news, live sports, and multi-camera sitcoms are generally shot at 59.94 or 60 fps for NTSC standard, and 25 and 50 fps for PAL standard. ( In India PAL video format is used ). There are many consumer cameras available that can record 60, 90, 120, 240, and even 1,000 frames per second! Before selecting the frame rate, you must have a clear idea about how it is going to affect your video. Simply, higher the fps, less blurred motions will be there in your video. If you use a lower frame rate like 25 fps, your video will look more like a film and if you use 60 fps, your video will look more like a broadcast.
