Tips for Fashion Photography

1. It is not a one-person job, but a group effort –

You have to co-operate with your team because they are the ones who’ll keep the shoot running if you get loose at some point. The team generally includes Models, Stylist, Makeup Artist, Designers, Hair stylist, Art director, Digital assistant and of course the Photographer. The entire team helps make a great shoot happen.

2. Be a Director –

Direct the model. Ask him/her to change poses according to you and be as intense or as fun as you want it to look on the frame. Always keep the model and the team engaged by talking with them and make them comfortable.

3. Master the Technical Settings –

Knowing the angle of lights and the camera settings like a pro is very important because an over-exposed or an under-exposed picture can make or break the shoot. When shooting in low light or into the sun, you may require an extra light source. If all you have is flash then rather than shoot straight on, set it to bounce of a nearby reflector, wall or ceiling. Experiment with angles to create an array of effects and discover what works best for you and the scene you are shooting. Be careful to pay attention to unwanted shadows that may fall across the face and body.

4. It helps if you know other genres of photography –

Fashion Photography is not always done inside the studio, it might as well happen in the woods or near the waterfall or out in the street; which is why it helps if you have some hands-on experience about the other genres of photography.
