Vintage digital cameras are making a soaring comeback in the market. Digicams have become the new film camera instead of our trusted and well-serving DSLRs in Japan. But, why vintage or “old” digital cameras are surging? What makes them unique? Is it a thing about just a trend that would die like every other trend?

We know you have a lot of questions and by the end of this blog, we intend to build some clarity around the hype of digicams/vintage cameras.

The aesthetics:

Right away, the first thing that makes vintage digital cameras stand apart from DSLRs, Mobile Cameras etc is the aesthetics. Digicams have been a part of our lives while growing up and one of the main aims of photography is to re-live the nostalgia or to capture our treasured memories. While pictures can be post-processed to get to the vintage feel, aesthetically pleasing pictures the way they looked in past, why not altogether use digicams in the first place to produce a picture that might not need the additional step of vintage post-processing? These vintage cameras are being used to shoot films because of the eye-pleasing errors it adds to the video, the vintage touch as we may say.

These are comparatively simple to operate:

The tools used in the world of photography where there has been a race of higher megapixels, faster shutter speed, and wide aperture, it has also added to the complexity involved in using DSLRs. For the Gen-Z, even learning a digicam might be a tedious process, but when compared to a DSLR with excessive buttons and an additional learning curve, vintage cameras turn out to be a better option. Not to mention, even professionals prefer using digicams for movies nowadays to ease their post-processing steps.

The Filmic quality is supreme & gives a familiar vibe:

As discussed above, vintage digital cameras reign supreme when it comes to the production of video and providing a filmic quality to the video. The natural grain(depending on the model used), and the colour reproduction gives the video a very familiar vibe because of the significance of digicams in our lives while growing up.

Will this trend die soon?

As for 2022, this trend only seems to be getting bigger and bigger with no intention to stop or to grow out of fashion. While technologies would keep improving, there is always going to be a sect of people that would appreciate the “vintage” feel of things and preserve the purity of how a few things started. Then again, the memories of people already attached to digicams are also playing a major role in the surge of their comeback, because we like to reflect back on our beginnings and digicams have been an integral part of the photography prior to mobile photography.

These have been our two cents on the ferocious rise of vintage cameras. Easy to use, an impeccable part of our lineage and the desired “aesthetic” feel that it gives to the pictures, very well makes it worthy of being in the trend and celebrated the way it has been.
