Choosing photography as your job is one of the best choices you would make in your life if you love photography and have a passion for it. However exciting as it may sound, you need to beware and make up your mind about the challenges you might face. While there are a plethora of vlogs that focuses on the cakewalk aspect of the photographers and how easy it is to start working as a photographer, it is pivotal for you to identify the market in which you would be providing your services as a photographer. Photographers in India and the USA are just not the same despite the skill sets that might be similar.
A Plain Hard Truth:
One of the coldest truths that could ever be served to you is the instability and anxiety that any artistic career route brings, especially in the early stages of your work. You might have your work stolen, might not get paid the said amounts and would have to adapt and develop your skin accordingly. The world is full of hope but so are dangers.
Know your worth:
The one mantra that would go a long way for you shall you choose this career path is knowing your worth, having the willingness to walk away and defining boundaries around the services that you provide. The human psyche is a paradox and collection of contradictions that is inexplicable. All that you need to know is, to be honest in your work and not let anyone take unfair advantage of you. If you believe your portraits are worth more than what you are currently being offered, do not hesitate to ask for them and be willing to wait.
You need a lot of patience:
Patience is a skill you would have to acquire to be successful in photography, That perfect shot would not be taken in a single go and you would have to wait, for the perfect lighting, and other factors while proactively working in the direction to make all the odds work in your favour. Akin to photography, you would need patience with the business aspect of your photography services if you plan to build a relatively stable business around your passion.
Stability & Branding:
The truth about the world lies in the term “change”. While we said above that the artistic career path is unstable, it cannot be negated that anything in the world is not stable. Perhaps we intend to help you brace yourself for the initial months/years of the grind and hustle that you would put in to work your dream career out. A stable job is comforting but if comfort is all that you seek, perhaps photography would be better for you as your hobby and not as your career. If you choose to walk the path of pursuing your passion, you would have to spend enough time figuring out your brand, your USP and the way you stand out as a photographer. Branding in itself is a vast topic and we would cover ‘branding yourself as a photographer soon in the upcoming vlogs.
Here are a few ‘truth bombs’ perhaps if you plan to pursue photography as the means to pay your bills. While it is sure to be challenging, if you love photography, you would perhaps love the journey and the work you are about to board. Best wishes!
